marinersguide.com The Magic and Mythology of Nautical Knots

The Bowline

The Bowline is the Sailor's primary knot. It is used and abused to do everything from tying a sheet to a clue to securing your boat to the dock. With practice you can learn to tie a Bowline with one hand, a very useful skill to have when your other hand is busy keeping a line from getting away.

Tying the Knot
1. Hold the "Bitter End" in your right hand between two fingers and hold the "Standing Part" in your left hand.
2. Put your hands together forming a cross.
3. Pick up both parts with your right hand and twist a loop in the "Standing Part".
4. Pass the "Bitter End" under the "Standing Part".
5. Put the "Bitter End" down through the loop.
6. Draw up the knot holding the "Standing Part" and "Bitter End".
