Once again we find ourselves wandering around the Atlantic City
Boat Show, checking out the booths and crawling around the boats.
Yeoman gets our vote for "Best New Gadget" with their XP1.
In contrast to digital display GPS's and PC based navigation,
Yeoman uses a real paper chart mounted on a digital pad. A
"mouse" inputs positional information and locates your current
fix. We like this approach, even if your GPS and all of your
electronics quits you still have the paper chart. You still know
where you are. The Yeoman can also be used mid-ocean with Small Area
Plots. Until someone can demonstrate a PC operating six feet under
water we recommend Yeoman technology. Now they have the XP1, a
12x8 inch system. Those of us sailing small boats will
find this more convenient than their larger versions.

Of course the seminars are an integral part of the AC Show.
Celestaire presented celestial navigation with a clarity that
made sense of all those months of USPS courses. Ken Gebhart took us
on a whirlwind passage through the theory, explaining the simplicity
and limitations of navigating by the stars. We highly recommend
you sit in on this course, especially you old USPS guys.

This years "Super Yacht Award" goes to Moody. Their 46 is the
definition of luxury. Everywhere you look there are the little
touches and the "fit and finish" that spell money. Even if you
can't afford the $475,000 price tag you should see this yacht.
The center cockpit features a unique pedestal, winches positioned
near the helmsman for single handed ease, and wrap around
cushions. Notice the windshield, that would be the one feature
to worry us. We are not sure how that would fare in heavy seas.
The cockpit is but a hint of the superb offerings below.
Just to wet your appetite here is their unique dining table.
Photographs do not do justice to this boat, you'll just have to
see it for yourself!
Moody 46 Dining Table
For those of us living a little closer to reality Hunter and
Catalina went head to head with huge multi-boat displays.
Both manufacturers enjoy an excellent reputation, but Hunter
wins "Best Display" this time for trucking in sand and toy
lobsters which captured the attention of every kid in the building.
Speaking of kids, there were lots of specialty boats just for
the young ones. Sailing is, after all, one of the last refuges of
wholesome family fun.
